While the worst of Hurricane Sandy is behind us, New Yorkers are dealing with the horror of a period with no power, food, or in many cases, the homes themselves.
The blog The Brooklyn Ink reports that many Gerritsen Beach homeowners are using generators to dry out homes and pump water out of them as the photo by Matt Vaughn shows:
Chris Gambale, 44, who has lived in Gerritsen Beach for 15 years could only describe the night the storm struck as “sheer panic” when flood waters quickly filled his basement and began seeping onto the first floor of his home. “What do you do? Where do you go?” he said. “It’s too late.”…He and his wife grabbed their dog and cat and went upstairs to the second floor as three inches of water began to fill their kitchen and bathroom.
Donald and Jean Dixon, in their seventies, have lived in Gerritsen Beach for 53 years and said they have never seen flooding on the scale brought by Hurricane Sandy. Now, they worry that the home repairs needed will be out of their financial reach due to their fixed incomes.
That’s going to be the most expensive aspect of disaster recovery: home repairs. Some homeowners don’t have insurance, yet should not be left out in the cold without some way to gain monetary compensation for their loss. The Government and FEMA are old hands at solving this problem, but this presents their biggest challenge to date.
An Uplifted Tree
The blog Pardon Me For Asking is chocked full of photos of everything from trees on Vespas, trees on cars, and this one showing a tree fully uprooted, Incredible Hulk-style, taking much of the sidewalk with it.
Stay tuned.
