Fruitvale: Oakland Film About Oscar Grant Wins Sundance Top Prize

Oscar Grant’s spirit lives on in the movie Fruitvale.

Fruitvale won top prize at The Sundance Film Festival and for the depiction of Oscar Grant’s last days of his life before he died at the gun of Johannes Mesherle in 2009 at the Fruitvale BART Station in Oakland.

Grant’s murder sparked riots and protest in Oakland:

Fruitvale became the first film Sundance film to win both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for U.S. Dramatic film since Precious in 2009.

Here’s FOX Searchlight CEO Tom Rothman presents Fruitvale’s director and writer Ryan Coogler with the award, saying that the film proves that movies can make a difference.
