First “Zero Waste” Holiday Tree By Recology To Be Given To Hillsdale Shopping Center

zero-waste Ever heard of a “Zero Waste Holiday Tree”? Well, this blogger had not either until today. A “Zero Waste Holiday Tree” is one made of recycled materials. Recology has made just such a tree and is giving it to Hillsdale Shopping Center located at 60 31st Ave, San Mateo, California.

Hillsdale Shopping Center is bringing sustainable holiday cheer to patrons by installing its very first recycled tree, designed by Recology San Mateo County (RSMC), located in the South End of the Center near Forever 21.

“The holidays are a time for sharing and we thought the concept of sharing recycled materials was a fun way to share the idea of reuse with our community,” said Christine Kupczak of Hillsdale Shopping Center.

The tree was designed by the employee-owners of Recology San Mateo County and built from scavenged materials found in Recology’s Disposal and Recycling Centers in San Francisco and San Bruno. The tree stands roughly eight feet tall and was built from an Ikea bed frame, recycled plastic bottles, and plywood.

“We believe this tree serves as a beautiful reminder to all of us to be more conscientious about our environment this holiday season,” Kupczak said.

Recology V.P and General Manager Mario Puccinelli said that even the toy wagon and tricycle around the tree were rescued from the disposal area. “With just a little elbow grease and a coat of fresh paint they are ready to be enjoyed again and will be donated to the Redwood City/San Mateo County Toy Drive” said Puccinelli.

The tree will be installed at 9 a.m., Monday, Nov. 25 2013 and will be on display through the end of December.
