A Safer City; A Safer Oakland
Our campaign for Oakland City Council

In a crisis such as this, we must do everything we can to stop the death and destruction of lives. As board chair of the Khadafy Washington Foundation for Non-violence, I have the honor of supporting Marilyn Harris and her incredibly difficult work of counseling & helping the families who lose a loved one to homicide.
Working with the families of homicide victims has been even more heartbreaking as the number of victims rises and rises. Over the last week we have seen a record number of homicides in one week.
Perhaps it is working with Oakland families who have suffered, perhaps it is the pain of losing kids I have counseled to our violent culture, that makes me so sure that we can’t simply grow our way out of this problem. Perhaps it’s Khadafy Washington Foundation board and policy research that I’ve done that helps me understand that we need to find the wisdom other cities have used to bring down their crime challenges. Not by arresting our way out of the problem, but by following proven strategies like Ceasefire, Broken Windows, or employing Compstat to better manage our shrinking police resources. It’s my understanding of our public safety challenges that led me to be the sole candidate endorsed by the Oakland Police Officers Association, the Oakland Firefighters and the Oakland Tribune.
