The Masters, Tiger Woods, Lindsey Vonn And History: Thomas Bonk Interview

The Masters is entering its second round as this blog post is being assembled and the buzz of the tournament is Tiger Woods, and for two reasons: 1) he’s the World’s Best Golfer once again, and 2) he’s got a new girlfriend, and not just any girl, but Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn. Will Tiger win, and who’s got the best chance of being in the top three contenders?

This blogger could not think of a better person to turn to for answers to those questions than my friend Thomas Bonk.

Tommy Bonk has covered the Masters as a sports journalist in one form or another for 20 years. Most of that time was with the Los Angeles Times, and currently, for The Masters, he’s contributing to Masters.com. “They’ve really amped-up their coverage with streaming video,” he says of the site that he writes content for.

Who Will Win?

Bonk says that he thinks The Masters is Tiger Woods’ to beat, and that his f-bomb was just an indication that he was fully back to being a normally good player, rather than the buttoned up version he became after the Thanksgiving 2009 incident with his wife. Bonk says that Tiger Wood’s stats are unbelievable, winning 27 percent of the contests he’s been in though his life, a stat Bonk says is “mindbending.” Woods is the leader in scoring average, money, and victories.

That said, Thomas Bonk does think Tiger Woods will be challenge, and specifically by Justin Rhoades of England and Ricky Bauer of the USA. But when you watch the video, it’s not hard to come away with the idea that Mr. Bonk thinks Tiger can win it.

Lindsey Vonn’s There, Too

Bonk was surprised that Woods girlfriend Vonn arrived, and said that she’s every bit as advertised: tall and hot. But with all of the celebrity she brings, would you believe, according to Tommy, that not one person bothered her. There’s something to be said for that. And it seems to come from the intense respect attendees have for the rules and tradition of The Masters. A series of long time expectations that extend even to making sure items aren’t expensive to purchase there. According to Bonk, it’s such that people are always on their best behavior: speak only when spoken to, especially by golf celebs.
