On March 22, 2009, Oakland lost a great institution and community landmark when The Parkway Speakeasy Theater closed its doors, abruptly ending a twelve year reign.
Now, after many failed attempts to reopen the original theater, THE NEW PARKWAY is rising in a new location, with a whole new crew, but the same basic mission statement: great food and drinks, awesome (well, mostly) movies, and a place for residents and visitors to congregate, celebrate and luxuriate.
The New Parkway is being resurrected by an enthusiastic, energetic ensemble of talented volunteers, investors, industry professionals and fans, replicating this beloved venue in a renovated warehouse in Uptown Oakland, on 24th Avenue at Telegraph, a strategic move that will successfully relocate the original business model to a thriving, centrally located hub, amid Art Murmur and anchoring a lively strip of revived restaurants, clubs, cafes and shops.
The New Parkway will be a Bay Area wide destination, just like its predecessor, with a personality and style of its own. There will be two screens offering eclectic programming, furnished by couches and cabaret-style seating, as well as an in-house cafe offering a full menu, including pizza, beer, and wine – and much more.
The theater will open sometime in the month of November, 2012, exact date TBA.
In the meantime, The New Parkway is partnering with its 24th Street neighbors to present a very special film and food fair called 24TH ON 24TH – taking place on Wednesday, October 24, up and down 24th Street in Oakland.
Some of the businesses participating in this event include:
– Kitchener Oakland: 372 24th Street
– Center for Creative Growth: 355 24th Street
– InkWell Tattoo: 2400 Broadway @ 24th Street
– Soja Martial Arts: 2406 Webster Street @ 24th Street
– Sweet Bar Bakery: 2355 Broadway Street @ 24 Street
– New Parkway Theater, 474 24th Street
Free movies and food will be offered at each location, offering citizens a taste of what’s to come, very soon….
