Since I run Zennie62Media’s dedicated server, and am responsible for cybersecurity, on top of my duties as Startup CEO, I started to think about the City of Oakland’s ransomware problem that happened February 8th, 2023.
Ransomware attacks have been way up since the Pandemic happened. Basically the problem is someone got a hold of the admin username and password and then went into the appropriate server, then uploaded a file designed to disable operation of that server or network. But not just any person in the public would know which one to get to. But someone in IT would.
The majority of ransomware attacks happened via remote work sites, where the communication was via email and internet and there were no co-workers around to watch what someone does. Thus, the workers are at home and not supervised. So, what’s to stop a worker from deliberately sharing access information with a third party, and then have that person break into the system, then ask to get paid by the City of Oakland, and then share a percentage of that money with the Oakland worker?
The Interim City Administrator should not shut down buildings because that causes workers to stay at home, thus maintaining the separation that more than likely caused the attack in the first place. Instead, The Interim City Administrator should publicly announce the investigation will include a review and audit of those employees responsible for network operations, for the purpose of determining if the effort was an inside job.
While it may sound cold, colder still is an attempt to hold the City of Oakland hostage. That should be considered an act of war.
