The once-in-a-lifetime event of a series of shooting stars is one this blogger could not miss. It’s the reported result of, according to ABC News “multiple streams of debris ejected from the faint comet 209P/LINEAR, which crosses into Earth’s orbit around the sun approximately once every five years.”

I am in the perfect place to see this event, save for the fact that my mother, who’s company I am keeping as much as I can considering she’s approaching 80 as of this writing, has the all-too-urban fear of the dark around her own property. It’s a view not shared by me; we’re not in Atlanta, but far outside of it, and in an area not known for crime – in fact it’s one of the safest places in America.

So, I took the truck and ventured out and up the way on our property, and where I could get a better look at the celestial show going on.

Even though I didn’t see a shooting star, perhaps due to the lighting I took with me to illuminate the grounds and keep the large deers away (I’m not kidding as this is faux Bigfoot country too, but you never know.), I did see far more than the normal number of stars above me. It was incredible.

You have only to look up to understand our role in the Universe. It’s not that we’re not important, but that we’re blessed to hold such a role where we’re able to see the stars, dream about traveling to them, and then make devices that get us closer to doing so.

We’re not alone.

We can’t be.

Maybe Mom’s right to be afraid of being out here at night. Because, if I were an alien visitors from outer space to Earth, the last place I’d think of landing would be in the middle of 79th Street on The South Side of Chicago at 11 PM at night.

Nah, the outskirts of Atlanta, way in the country of the South, is better for an alien. You can look up here and really get that God exists. It’s no wonder there are so many bible belters here.

It’s not history or ethnicity. The real reason has to be that someone looked up at the stars, and then just a little bit later, met a little green man.

And instead of going for his bottle, he went for his Bible.

Wow.

God bless.
