Elihu Harris Biography Elihu Mason Harris (born August 15, 1947) is a former politician and college administrator. A member of the Democratic Party, Harris served as the 46th mayor of Oakland from 1991 to 1999. He previously served for 12 years (1978–1990) as a member of the California State Assembly. He was the Chancellor of Peralta Community College District from 2003 to 2010. Elihu Harris was Oakland’s second black mayor. Harris received a Master of Public Policy from University of California, Berkeley in 1969 and law degree from UC Davis School of Law in 1975. From 1979 until 1991 he served as a named partner in the law firm of Harris, Alexander and Burris. He has also served as a California Uniform Law Commissioner since 1981. In 2000 Elihu was appointed by Governor Gray Davis to the California Unemployment Appeals Board where he served until 2003. As mayor, Harris presided over the development of City Center, and the government center at its center. He green-lit the Rotunda Building, and with developer David Alexander, created what is now called The Uptown Entertainment District. He worked to bring jobs to Oakland and in projects large and small, from buildings like the Ask.com structure to the second Cirque du Soleil event ever held in America, in 1996. He also spearheaded, with Oakland Councilmember Dick Spees the creation of the Chabot Space and Science Center. As mayor, Harris for the return of the Raiders to Oakland in 1995. He also pushed for and caused the reconstruction of Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena, where the Golden State Warriors won four NBA titles and appeared in the NBA Finals five times. Ignacio De La Fuente Biography Ignacio De La Fuente (born January 1, 1949) was an Oakland City council member. He was also the President of Oakland’s City Council until January 2009, when he became vice mayor of Oakland. First elected to the Oakland City Council in 1992, he served as the chair of the Council’s Economic and Community Development Committee until January 1999. When Oakland adopted the Strong-Mayor form of government, that removed the Mayor from the City Council and created the position of Council President. De La Fuente became the first Council member to be elected by his peers to serve as President of the Oakland City Council in 1999. He has been re-elected to this position every two years since then. position was created and until he stopped running for re-election in 2012. He ran for Mayor of Oakland in the 2022 Election coming behind Counciilmember Sheng Thao, who won. The First Time Both Have Appeared To Talk On Any Program Together This marks the very first time both have been on one media program together after serving in office. I was Elihu’s Economic Advisor when Ignacio was the head of the Oakland City Council as Chair, and then as President, I was head of the effort to bring the Super Bowl to Oakland from 1999 to 2001.
