Danny Carroll, the new Iowa GOP Chairman and ‘family values’ advocate who campaigns against gay marriage and is a social conservative advocate, is also on record as having taken advantage of an elderly widow named Cora Creamer in a real estate deal.
As reported by Mother Jones’ Patrick Caldwell, In 1992 Cora Creamer owned her Las Vegas home (where she and her late husband moved after residing in Grinnell, Iowa), but the cost of the upkeep was too much for her to afford. Ms. Creamer had $7,900 in back taxes and other debts.
To relieve the problem, the then-67-year-old Cora Creamer sought help and seemed to find it in the form of then-real estate agent Danny Carroll. Basically, Danny Carroll and an Iowa lawyer named Brian Bisbee convinced Cora Creamer to give them 50 percent ownership in her home on the condition that they would pay off her debt, then once they got ownership, Carroll and Bisbee sold the home and pocketed all of the profits, sharing not even 50 percent of them with Cora Creamer.
The result was that Brian Bisbee was punished for the transaction and for taking a personal steak in it, losing his license to practice law in Iowa. Danny Carroll, who was the broker engineering the sale of the house, got far more than the $6,171.39 he paid Ms. Creamer to clear her debt.
Thus, Ms. Creamer was literally robbed of over $40,000 in profits she could have collected had the deal been done in an ethical way. What should have happened was that Bisbee should have worked to have a fee for service, as Carroll. It would have then been Ms. Creamer’s responsibility to pay the fees for service after the sale of the home, but she would have had the $43,000 to pull those amounts from.
But, Mother Jones’ Patrick Caldwell paints a story where two men obviously tricked an older woman into a situation that was in their best interests, and not hers.
And now one of those two men, Danny Carroll, is Iowa’s GOP Chairman.
