City Of Oakland Workers Strike Tuesday December 5th – List Of Closures Of Services And Programs

On Tuesday December 5th, 3,000 City of Oakland workers representing unions SEIU Local 1021 and IFPTE Local 21.

As posted on its website, this is the reason IFPTE Local 21 Union workers are striking:

Local 21 members voted on Tuesday and Wednesday to STRIKE if
the City continues to refuse to come to a fair contract settlement. 95% voted in favor of striking and soundly rejecting the 2% cost of living per year proposal from the City. Oakland Vice President Renee Sykes said, “Asking members to fall behind when the city is doing so well economically is unacceptable. We gave back when times were hard, and now we see they are going to keep asking us to fall further
behind when times are good!!!

Enough is enough. It’s time to show the City that we are united and will fight for what’s right.”

Why did we vote to authorize a strike? Your Bargaining Team recommended a YES vote because of the City’s refusal to offer more than a 2% cost of living increase per year
.
With the CPI being 3.8%, L21 workers making almost 10% less than comparable jurisdictions, and with the Oakland economic forecast
being excellent, there is simply no reason to cheat public workers.

Things have reached a place at the bargaining table where negotiators and members on the Local 21 Bargaining Team think that the City is stuck at 2% and 2% over 2 years and isn’t inclined to move without escalation from the membership. Our team isn’t alone in this assessment.

Other city unions have also reached a point where action is needed.
Local 21 is working closely with other city unions to coordinate future actions.

Due to a significant staff shortage, the City of Oakland Workers strike will force the City to close nearly every City facility and program during the strike. Starting tomorrow morning at 7 am and until the strike concludes, all City buildings and facilities will be closed to the public, and most City programs and services will be cancelled or postponed.

All City Council Committee meetings on December 5 have been cancelled

Programs and Facilities that will be CLOSED:
