The anticipated sequel to J.J. Abrams 2009 Star Trek movie reboot will not have the legendary Benicio Del Toro playing ‘Khan’ in a remake of the popular Star Trek The Original Series First Season Episode “Space Seed.”
As Trekkers will recall, that genius story aired April 2, 1967 and featured the late Ricardo Montalban playing the charismatic super human captain of a ship the Enterprise finds floating, lost in space for, as it turns out, 300 years. The crew of the ship is revived by Khan, assisted by a female Enterprise crew member, Lt. McGivers, who fell under his spell, and they plot to take over Captain Kirk’s ship. But Khan is thwarted by Lt. McGivers and by Kirk, after a brawl where Kirk surprises Khan by hitting him with a bar-like took in the Engineering Room. Kirk regains control of The Enterprise, and Khan and his people are banished to a planet called Ceti Alpha V.
The Star Trek Movie Of 1982
When Star Trek’s growing popularity spawned a set of movies, the second one was called Star Trek II The Wrath Of Khan and, released the summer of 1982, brought back William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and Ricardo Montalban in a role that Montalban should have received an Academy Award Nomination for. That movie takes up 15-years after Kirk drops off Khan and his people to Ceti Alpha V, and finds Khan angry, over the death of his wife and many of his people because Ceti Alpha VI exploded and corrupted Ceti Alpha V’s atmosphere and ecosystem, and shifting its orbit. While in pursuit of Kirk, Khan acquires the Genesis Device and after a chase, and seeing it as his only chance for revenge, Khan activates it. In trying to repair the Enterprise’ Warp Drive to escape the Genesis Device, Spock is irradiated to a point of death; he saves the ship and its crew.
The Best Star Trek Villain
Khan is regarded as, if not the best Star Trek villain characters, then number two behind Dominion from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. The news that Benicio Del Toro will not play Khan does not necessarily point to the idea that remaking Space Seed will not be the objective of Star Trek 2. However Star Trek 2 is set for release May 17, 2013.
Stay tuned.
