President Obama peeked out first with a wave, then waited for the First Lady to join him. A crowd waited for him, but were remarkably quiet under the slight drizzle.
The president opened a black umbrella to hold over himself and the First Lady and began walking down the stairs. Sasha Obama held a black umbrella of her own following, which Malia Obama hurried to get under. Marian Robinson followed behind.
Many of the president’s staff — including national security adviser Susan Rice and communications director Jen Psaki –gathered under the wing, taking photos of their own on iPhones. Sen. Dick Durbin captured the moment on a more traditional camera.
