Peyton Manning’s NFL Innovation: Play Action Pass To Slot Wide Receiver – Video
Peyton Manning retires today and with his departure goes a massive innovation: the play action pass to the slot receiver.
This play started with Tom Moore and Manning when Moore was the offensive coordinator and while Peyton first used it from under center, it was far more devastating from the shotgun spread formation.
The Colts use of the play started in 2004 but really became a weapon of use in 2005. When Mannjng went to Denver, the play came with him and was the signature of the offense when Peyton was in it.
It’s s play so damaging that it has been copied at very level of football and wound up in the Oregon Offense under Chip Kelly – Kelly’s modified version calls for a cross buck rather than a line buck by the running back – thus the free safety really moves out of the post area and makes the hole the receiver runs into even larger.
Peyton Mannjng. An innovator.
