DeMarco Murray: Dallas Cowboys New Blocking Style Helps

DeMarco Murray: Dallas Cowboys New Blocking Style Helps
DeMarco Murray, The Dallas Cowboys Running Back, has had seven straight games of over 100 yards in 2014. The reason I have found for this rests in a new style of blocking.

I went back to past plays from 2013 and noticed that the Cowboys Offensive Line would classically try to get its pads lower than the shoulders of the defender: get leverage. You can see many examples of offensive linemen getting low – almost cut blocking but not quite as that is not legal.

This year, the Cowboys blockers stay high and push defenders with their hands. They do not hold but they push. They use their bodies and hands to push defenders.

It’s a way of blocking I have seen used by Airraid Offensive Attacks, like Cal,Texas A&M, and Kentucky. Look at how they run block – it’s not a draw play but the same push style of blocking but with one difference: the Cowboys start from a three – point stance and not a two point.

The result is a great year for DeMarco Murray. He is already over 1,000 yards and on pace for 2,000; in 2013 he gained 1.121 yards in 14 games.
