Jimmy Kimmel’s “Kill All The People In China” Skit Uproar Is Silly

Jimmy Kimmel unleashed a skit featuring kids, and in the mode of the AT&T commercials where kids say the darnedest things, and in it, one kid did say a darnedest thing: that in order to remove the problem of ‘China owning all of American debt’ we should kill all of the people in China.

That skit was funny to this blogger and because it was so out of bounds of reality that it could only be funny. First, China in no way owns all of the United States’ debt. The truth is China and a number of other nations own U.S Treasury Securities as a way of investing in the dollar – China owns 26 percent of the total, the largest percentage. So the idea that China owns America, which has been pushed in media like this:

Is just plain wrong.

As this blogger recalls, there was no uproar from Chinese groups over that presentation.

But now comes Jimmy Kimmel and suddenly there’s a hue and cry. Why? No one said anything negative about anyone Chinese. Moreover, if someone made a commercial in China saying “kill America” there would not be the same anger. It also is not the same as someone making a skit about killing a racial or ethnic group.

Still, it’s not a skit I would have even thought of doing, but then the whole idea about China owning America is down right silly in itself.

Move along.
