You might be wondering why I start this brief review off with that statement, but it’s because some reviewers don’t seen to look at the second installment in the Marvel Entertainment Thor movie series with any respect for the story.
Look, Thor is a legendary comic book character who’s 50 years old, at least in the length of time the comic book has been around. If you’ve never read the Thor comics, then passing judgement on the movie is just not right. You have to give Thor, the story, the respect it deserves.
The problem with the first Thor movie is that it was far too earth-bound to be enjoyed. It seemed as if the writers were trying to justify Thor to us, rather than recognize that the fantasy that is Thor is worthy of being shown. Thor: The Dark World does just that.
It’s an interesting story of what happens to a family under stress, and it just so happens that the stress comes in the form of the release of a long-dormant enemy, Malekith the Accursed.
Malekith the Accursed, ruler of the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim, is bent on the destruction of Thor’s home, Asgard, and his father, Odin using a living weapon called the Aether. What frees Malekith to embark on his quest is something called the Convergence, a kind of alignment of the Nine Realms (different universes) that produces hole that one can travel through from one realm to the other – a giant series of rips in space and time allowing one to go vast distances in a matter of moments.
Without giving too much of the story away, I have to say I followed it and enjoyed it. Thor: The Dark World is a nice escape from the ordinary. It’s entertaining, and I particular enjoyed the character interplay between Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth, and Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston and Thor and Odin, played by the legendary Anthony Hopkins. I’d like to have seen more of Jaimie Alexander, but a tip of the hat to Rene Russo, who plays Thor’s Mom, Frigga. It’s also cool to see the legendary Idris Alba, playing Heimdall the Asgardian, gain more screen time in Thor 2.
