Breaking Bad is now history. It ended with “Breaking Bad, Season 5 Episode 16, Felina,” which was a classic work of modern television. It was deep, gritty, and horribly violent – perhaps too much so.
Breaking Bad has ushered in a lot of talk about the “New Golden Age of Television” and at its center a number of “anitheros,” and all male – and all of this as if it’s a good thing. Well, it’s not.
That Breaking Bad is so popular, and yet reflects a man, Walter White, and his turn to the dark underbelly of society reveals to a large degree just how fucked up American society has allowed itself to become on some levels.
About the only big positive thing one can say about American society today is that it’s far less racist than in the past. But with that, and in a separate way, it has become too rude, too edgy, and too violent. In some cities crime is not only common, it’s a way of life, and some join gangs because they don’t know of another way.
There’s nothing wrong with the nice aspects of American society: being nice to each other, making things, helping people, great food, great company. But this obsession with harming and killing each other is just plain nuts, and Breaking Bad in all of its glory, reflects that.
It’s not the right direction for American society, even if it is great television.
Stay tuned.
