Boston Bombing: Boston Marathon The Scene Of Terrorism

Boston experienced tragedy yesterday as two bombs exploded at the finish line of the Boston Marathon leaving three dead and 170 wounded. As of yet no individual or group has claimed responsibility for the tragedy.

According to ABC news’ blog “It appears at least one of the bombs used in the Boston Marathon attack was composed of a pressure cooker filled with nails and ball bearings, according to federal sources.” ( http://abcnews.go.com/m/blogEntry?id=18966216 )

The attack is now being called a terrorist attack by President Obama who is assuring the country and world as a whole that those responsible will be apprehended. This of course is the question on everyone’s mind.

Who would do such a thing?

Of course the obvious suspect would be Al Quaeda or other international terrorist groups, but if responsible it is surprising that they have refrained from taking responsibility for the attack.

The bombing is clearly an act of terrorism. Such an act, carried out on such a large group, and in such a public manner can only be for the purpose of inspiring fear. That is the essence of terrorism. Whether this was the work of an organization or of a lone madman remains to be seen.

The motivation for the attack is as equally mystifying as the identity of those responsible. This was not an attack on an institution of American government or wealth. Nor does it seemed to be aimed at a specific issue or group, as the marathon was made up of so many people.

This even further complicates the task of finding those responsible since the motivation for the attack is so unclear. What is clear however is that the bombing was a direct attack on the American people.

Beyond this, anything more would be purest speculation. The country can only hold Boston in its thoughts as it waits for more information and the capture of those responsible for this heinous crime.
