The Excalibur Las Vegas Hotel and the staff of the website VEGAS.com were rocked by the murder of Jessica Corinne Kenny, who worked the front desk of the casino resort, on Friday evening around 8:30 p.m. Yes, the same Friday that saw 26 people involved in another murder-suicide at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut that morning.
Before this blogger continues, my sympathies to the staff at The Excalibur Hotel and at VEGAS.com, and to their friends and family members.
What’s even sadder than the Vegas murder-suicide news, is the seeming attempt to sweep it under the rug as ‘it’s ok. It was a domestic dispute.’ It is never OK that someone’s shot, let alone at the hotel reservations desk of a major establishment like the Excalibur Las Vegas Casino.
Moreover, it’s upsetting to know that the entire experience of a trip to Vegas or a stay at a place like The Excalibur can be damaged just by hearing gun shots. That’s what Alexa Shepich shared on Twitter on December 14th, just as the incident happened:
@fiercesport I’m in my room in Vegas at the Excalibur and some guy shot the concierge am then shot himself I heard. All I heard was gun shots
— Alexa Shepich (@PCMalexa18) December 15, 2012
And from reading the Twitter conversations in her thread, other hotel guests were standing there when it happened:
@pcmalexa18 @fiercesport it was a man who shot his wife and himself.

@marissacash95 @fiercesport so that’s who it was? The lady I met in the elevator saw it all and said it was a lady that works here
— Alexa Shepich (@PCMalexa18) December 15, 2012
@pcmalexa18 @fiercesport the lady might of worked here but it was her husband who shot her. My dad was stuck right by it.

And Alexis Mansperge from New York City reported that she was “just 20 feet away” when it happened:
Someone just shot themselves dead in front of the Excalibur hotel, I was 20 feet away

The man who shot her was a 31-year-old named Edward C. Brandt (who I have discovered goes by Eddie Clayton Brandt) reportedly of Lake Forest, Ill and Eddie lived in Lake Villa, IL from 2003 to 2005 according to MyLife and other social media sites.
For some reason, media outlets are reporting Eddie Brandt to be Ms. Kenny’s husband, but those who know her just say he was “someone she knew.” Take this statement by Elyse Janel, who FOX 5 Vegas describes as Jessica Kenny’s friend:
“She was one of my best friends. It really was a privilege to know her. I can speak for everyone that knows her really and say that she was amazing, GREAT sense of humor, genuine, strong, would light up any room with her fantastic personality and just a loving woman. She will be missed by so many people.
“I heard of this (Friday) night was while I was working at Planet Hollywood. My mother works at the Excalibur and saw Jess earlier in the day. My mom heard the shots fired and immediately texted me to tell me, also to see if Jessica was working or if she was OK. I called/text/messaged her a bunch of times. I called her mom to inform her what was happening and she started calling around, only to find out shortly after her daughter was the female victim taken to UMC. The person who shot her was someone she knew. No warning signs, no reason to suspect or even worry really. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected by this tragic event.”
Janel said “No warning signs, no reason to suspect or even worry really,” but that can’t be the case. Didn’t anyone know her well enough to know that this man may have been some kind of threat to her?
There’s no social media footprint to obviously tie Jessica Kenny with Eddie Brandt. No obvious Facebook page, no real item other than the fact that Jessica was wearing a Chicago sport team jersey and Eddie lives just outside of Chicago. That would seem to indicate a possible connection that goes back to the Windy City, but how much this is true is not known as of this writing.
Shootings Must Stop
What is known is that a person can carry a gun in Las Vegas with too much freedom. It’s also crazy to discover that, with all of the money swirling around the Las Vegas Strip, there’s not a better effort at gun control.
Something has to change.
