On Sunday, Tony Scott, the famed director of such classic movies as Top Gun, Days Of Thunder, and Crimson Tide, took his own life in Los Angeles on Sunday. To say this blogger is sad of this news is an understatement and makes this entry particularly hard to type. The 68-year-old self-proclaimed “live on the edge” risk-taking adrenaline junkie told The Sunday Times of UK’s Ariel Leve that he needed only three hours sleep, finished climbing the face of El Capitan in Yosemite, and was a workaholic who loved his two boys, but was seldom at home.
Why would a man like Tony Scott, who seemingly had it all – a lovely, indeed major hot wife, many in the industry who loved him, and incredible homes, not to mention an iconic body of film work – would commit suicide?
At times like this, this blogger reaches for his personal belief on God. To that, it’s just plain wrong to take your own life. There’s nothing – absolutely nothing – that is beyond repair if the person remains alive to find a way to do so. Tony Scott not only didn’t think that was the case in killing himself, according to Nikke Finke at the blog Deadline, it was reportedly the second time he tried to do so that day; the first time wasn’t successful.
Tony Scott had everything to look forward to. He was even preparing to make a new sequel to Top Gun, some 25 years later, and reuniting the cast that made the film such a pop-culture classic. His brother Ridley Scott was a partner in the film business with him, and Sir Ridley made Tony a producer in his recent movie Prometheus.
Tony Scott wasn’t hurting for money.
As the days go on, we will learn more – a suicide note was reportedly found in his office.
