UPDATE: California Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom paved the way for President Obama’s announcement.
President Obama backs Gay Marriage, and to show you how big a deal it’s not, the event of his announcement on ABC’s Good Morning America didn’t even continue to register on Twitter Top Trends or Google Trends as of 6:16 PM CST.
According to The Huffington Post‘s Sam Stein, President Obama said this:
“I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.”
The bottom line is people should be able to do what they wish, as long as that action does not impact the civil rights of others.
Of course – and lets’ face it – President Obama became the first World leader to say that Gay Marriage is OK. Yeah, that in itself if a big deal, but because information, and our ability to adjust to it, changes so much, I don’t think it’s going to be the political risk some others believe it to be.
In fact, Obama’s moving Mitt Romney in a direction he can’t deal with: not being able to flip-flop.
Moving along.
Stay tuned.
