Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition Star Kate Upton’s catching all of the Heaven and Hell that goes with being a new big star. But this blogger can’t remember Brooklyn Decker getting this kind of hater-whining.
First, there’s all the questions about she and New York Jets Quarterback Mark Sanchez possibly dating. This goes back to New York Post Page Six rumors that she was dating the Jets passing master (for now), last fall. That led to my questions of what happened to the rumors that she was with Kanye West. This is what New York Post Page Six reported:
Kanye West has set his sights on yet another gorgeous model — blond Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue beauty Kate Upton. The star was spotted sneaking in the back door at the Victoria’s Secret VIP Swim event at Club L in Los Angeles at 11:30 p.m. and sitting with impossibly attractive Upton. A spy reports the two were seen flirting and left hand-in-hand through the back door to avoid paparazzi around 12:30 a.m.
And my video…
What I’ve figured out is some of the media types practice a kind of weird match-making: some don’t want her to be with Kanye West, even though they’ve been linked to each other, but they do want her to be with Mark Sanchez, because? Race? Yeah, institutional racism for some, but not for most of the media that really just plain covers the gossip news.
Still, it’s funny how some in the media play that game. Like linking Lindsey Vonn with Tim Tebow, even though all of the signs and photos point to Tim’s brother Robbie Tebow and not him. Good for Robbie to be able to date someone as hot as Ms. Vonn, and still stay under the radar.
But I digress; now Kate Upton’s fielding questions about Sanchez, and then dealing with some Victoria Secret operative named Sophia Neophitou (try that last name) saying that Upton would “never make” a VS runway fashion show, and said this to the New York Magazine! What was Sophia Neophitou trying to do in attacking another member of the VS brand? That was crazy.
But crazy reactions seem to be coming up in the wake of Upton’s new stardom.
Take the Forbes Magazine post where the really attractive Jenna Goudreau is blasting Upton for being “not relatable” – that is, a really attractive woman. God forbid any guy calling Jenna Goudreau hot (she is), because if you do (unless you fall into a certain guy type she finds attractive and I’d bet is predictable, then she drops the rules), she’ll blast you.
Of Upton, Jenna writes:
Upton’s not normal. She’s a model. For that matter, I don’t see how she’s so strikingly different from any other models found in the annual Swimsuit Issue. SI isn’t in the business of high fashion or of representing the masses. At least once a year, it’s in the business of young, sexy models. Last year’s cover shot of Irina Shayk was similarly busty.
OK. Here’s Jenna complaining about Upton being “busty,” but then has a photo of herself being busty, leaning so that all can get a cleavage shot.
Jenna! Come on! You look as good as Ms. Upton, don’t hate!
I do see what Ms. Goudreau is complaining about with respect to “skinny models” and the bad signals sent to young girls, and I agree, but Upton does not fit the mold of skinny model. In fact, that’s what many have written about her. Take Guy Trebay in the New York Times:
Unlike the many little-known beauties now on view at New York Fashion Week — women seldom identified by more than one name (Agata, Hanaa, Frida, Joan) — Kate Upton, just 19 and resembling a 1950s pinup, but with the legs of a W.N.B.A. point guard, has arrived on the scene as a largely self-created Internet phenomenon.
To me, that’s a reach, because Kate doesn’t have thighs or legs like, say, WNBA Star Maya Moore. But, regardless, the point is, Upton’s not a skinny mini, and she does have a tush.
Just ask Kanye or Mark.
Stay tuned.
