Ever been “so hungry that you could eat a horse?” Well at the end of November President Obama sparked a lot of controversy when he legalized the slaughtering of horses for meat.
Overseas, in places such as France, places that serve horse meat need to have a horse head symbol outside the restaurant showing that horse meat is served there.
Now, there was an editorial earlier in the year in the New York Times and about a man who thought eating horse meat should no longer be taboo – unfortunately I cannot locate that specific editorial, but I am sure that guy is having a great time with this.
One reason that people are up in arms about the failure to prevent horse slaughter (besides the fact that people love horses) is that in 2009 President Obama had initially supported the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act which outlawed the transportation or purchase of horses for intent of human consumption.
Horses are given lots of shots and drugs during their lifetime so eating a horse that was once a pet for riding that was treated with antibiotics in its life would probably not be the healthiest thing to do, but The Marietta Times says that the new law makes it so meat can be exported to other countries.
