The Iraq War Is Over, US Troops Coming Home

President Obama welcomes troops home.
U.S. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama addressed American Troops at Fort Bragg, North Carolina on Wednesday announcing the end of the Iraq War.

President Obama said:

It’s harder to end a war than begin one. Indeed, everything that American troops have done in Iraq -– all the fighting and all the dying, the bleeding and the building, and the training and the partnering -– all of it has led to this moment of success. Now, Iraq is not a perfect place. It has many challenges ahead. But we’re leaving behind a sovereign, stable and self-reliant Iraq, with a representative government that was elected by its people. We’re building a new partnership between our nations. And we are ending a war not with a final battle, but with a final march toward home.

It was a war we should not have been involved in, but because the George W. Bush Administration had to find a scape goat after the 9-11 tragedy, Iraq Dictator Sadaam Hussein – sometimes friend and foe of America – was offered as the perfect foil, even as evidence pointed away from Irag.

The White House has a great interactive timeline of the Irag War, and while it’s worth viewing here, it spares the Bush Administration just by omission.

More on this later, today.
