DragonCon 2011 Atlanta Drinking And Zombie Heart-Eating

The title pretty much describes what the video shows, but not in that order. At DragonCon 2011, I ran into a gentleman at a temporary bar island in the lobby of the Hyatt Regency Atlanta, who was contemplating the purchase of a drink called “Dragon’s Breath.” While, “Dragon’s Breath” is a simple mix of one-half-ounce Firewater cinnamon schnapps and one-half-ounce Bacardi 151 rum, if you’ve never had it, it sounds dangerous.

So, my new friend, who was watching his girlfriend eat a heart while being photographed, decided to get a “Dragon’s Breath,” so we did shots together – one shot for each of us, to play it safe. (Don’t do this before driving, please.)

While we were waiting in line for the bartender, my new drinking buddy (who’s name I didn’t even think of getting, but he’s got my card), talked about why he thought DragonCon was better than Comic Con in San Diego.

Echoing a view I heard expressed again and again at DragonCon 2011 Atlanta, he said the event wasn’t taken over by “corporations” – in other words, Hollywood studios.

At Comic Con, movie studios spend a lot of money on marketing and it shows in the stars that show up, the events, and the giant crowds they draw. Because of that, Comic Con is becoming more a temporary city than a convention. Now, I happen to enjoy Comic Con, so the size aspect is not something that bothers me. But DragonCon goers point to that, and the studios, as an unwanted element at what is called a “fan-driven” convention.

By the time he finished his talk about Comic Con, we got to the bartender, and consumed our shots. The drink’s not the hot, painful creation I thought it was going to be. It was actually not bad.

But the person doing the real drinking was my friend’s girlfriend, who had a giant jello mold shaped and colored like a human heart, and with generous quantities of vodka mixed in. So, when she started eating it, it looked like she was eating a heart!

Wild!

And wild was my moment there at DragonCon: one big sci-fi / fantasy excuse to party in downtown Atlanta.

Stay tuned.
