MAX STEEL MOVIE Ben Winchell, Ana Villafana, Stewart Hendler, Chris Yost Interview At Comic Con!

Max Steel is a new movie planned for 2015 release and made by Open Road Pictures. I had the pleasure of interviewing the stars and director and writer of the flick that’s based on the popular Mattel toy character at Comic Con 2014: Ben Winchell, Ana Villafane, Max Steel Director Stewart Hendler, and Max Steel Writer Chris Yost.

I was most interested in the take that they’re making this a ‘realistic’ movie. I was thinking they were referring to politics and terrorism, but I was wrong; teen angst is the focus. “We’re dealing with the things teenagers have to deal with in their lives,” Stewart Hendler said.

Because of that, the stars Ben Winchell, who plays Max McGrath, and Ana Villafana, who plays his girlfriend Sofia, had more leverage to give input on what the characters would do and say. They were able to draw on their own life experience and bring that to apply to what they do in the movie.

For both Ben and Ana, Max Steel is there first “tentpole” movie – a star-making vehicle that will define their movie careers for some time. With that, what was the other big difference from what they’ve done in the past? Mr. Winchell says it’s that he has to spend much more time on the set. For Ms. Villafana, it’s the giant support network of people around her.

I did not get to spend much time with the foursome, but from how I was able to see how Ben and Ana interact with fans at Comic Con, the pair are really nice actors who aren’t caught up in the epic scale of what they’ve done. That comes from the fact that Stewart and Chris picked them – they chose likeable people who reflect their personal values.

If Max Steel becomes a hit it will be because of the way the audience responds to Ben and Ana. And from what I observed at Comic Con, I think the movie will do quite well.

Stay tuned. http://ift.tt/1nW3aBi
