MARVEL’s Agents Of SHIELD Episode 1 Review

SHIELD-castMARVEL’s Agents Of SHIELD Episode 1 took the ideals that were expressed in an interview I heard with Joss Whedon where he said that it was about how we deal with the everyman who’s impacted by the extraordinary events and people around him.

MARVEL’s Agents Of SHIELD has great special effects, and better ones than I expected to see. I wasn’t too impressed with the regular cast with the exception of Clark Gregg, who reprises his role as Agent Phil Coulson from The Avengers and the Iron Man and Thor movies, and with one other person: Chloe Bennet, who plays Skye, the hacker, and comes with a rapid fire dialog that will cause her to break the talking speed records set in The Social Network.

But I most enjoyed the performance of J. August Richards, who plays Michael, an everyman manufacturing worker, who was fitted with a special version of the EXTREMISIS project human enhancement system. The result makes him superhuman, but also increasingly irritable and eventually prone to self-destruction: he will literally blow up if not stopped. Fortunately, Agent Coulson and The SHIELD team do, preserving Michael for another episode.

As it progresses, I hope MARVEL’s Agents Of SHIELD stays grounded in the way MARVEL’s Agents Of SHIELD Episode 1 was. It’s all too easy to get lost in the MARVEL universe, and forget about the real one.

Stay tuned.
