Today’s Cyber Monday and at 4:18 EDT, it’s well underway and, unlike Black Friday, held last Friday, doesn’t have the limit of a closing time. But the question is, will Cyber Monday 2012 be better than Cyber Monday 2011?
In 2011, this blogger wrote:
While Cyber Monday was spreading thanks to a great PR campaign featuring mentions on local television, it was the emergence and growth of social media that fueled the spread of Cyber Monday as a true day and a habit. For all practical purposes, Cyber Monday’s level of participation grew with the number of Facebook users. As of this writing, Black Friday 2011 sales were at $11.4 billion, and Cyber Monday sales will certainly top 10 percent of Black Friday totals.
So the answer is “yes,” Cyber Monday sales will surpass that of 2011, because the number of Facebook users has increased to around 900 million as of April. Some projections have today’s Cyber Monday closing at 12 midnight and setting a record of 1.5 billion. Some say that’s also due to the emergence of mobile, but it’s a combination of social media growth dynamics, from the emergence of mobile, to the growth of the number of Facebook users, which was at 600 million in 2011.
Stay tuned.
