X-Factor contestant Tulisa Contostavlos was someone I’d not heard of since I’ve not kept up with the show of late. But since her name was linked to a sex tape, which she admits is out there, and that she made with her now ex-boyfriend, I’ve not only heard of her, but she’s getting more coverage and attention than before the sex tape “problem” was announced.
What does this mean? What does it say about our society? First, it means that for all of the warnings not to have one, what this blogger calls “sex tape marketing” actually does work. Let’s face it, we’ve had cell phones with cameras in them for about 10 years, and while video in smartphones is still somewhat new, it’s not so new – it’s over three years old now – that it’s excusable not to know what the impacts of an image distributed from it could be.
So lets’ get it out in the open: if you’re a young, up-and-coming model or actress (and yes female), having a sex tape’s the best thing that can happen for you. You can always cry sadness – after all you’re an actress, right? And people will rush to your defense and comfort. After a time, the noise about the tape will lessen, but if you’re at all talented, the talk about you will not.
Make sure you have a good way to distribute your sex tape: a website, plenty of DVDs, and business cards. Make sure the cards are about you, as they actress, not you as starring in the sex tapes. And make sure the DVD’s don’t have any markings that imply you made them. Go out, and maybe happen to leave one in the seat of a train or something. Then wait.
In about a week, you’re a star!
Stay tuned.
