Everyone agreed that this year’s Inauguration was, as Paul Ryan put it, much warmer than the last Obama Inauguration in 2009. One of the people who noted that as we were sitting down in Section 16 was Wesley Clark. General Clark is a four-star general, Vietnam Net, and at one point the Supreme Commander of NATO. General Clark’s life reads as a living history book that takes one from Arkansas to Vietnam, to his run for President in 2004. Heck, there’s even a street named after him in both Đakovica, Kosovo and Madison, Alabama.
Seeing him about four seats away, I looked over, and before I could nod, Gen. Clark said “Well, it’s getting a bit warmer,” in referring to the weather, where, while it was definitely much warmer than in 2009, it was still a cold winter morning. Period.
I agreed with him (you’d have to have lived on The North Poll not to), and then went over and introduced myself. I asked if I could interview him, and he graciously said yes. The total result was a 14 minute conversation on the state of the World, essentially, but we opened with his view of President Obama’s selection of Chuck Hagel to be his Secretary of Defense.
Gen. Clark didn’t hesitate to say that “Oh, Chuck Hagel’s a great guy. He was a real friend of mine when I was in the military, he supported me. He was a Senator on the Senate Arms Services committee. Oh, I think he’s terrific. He’ll do a great job as Secretary Of Defense.
Well, that’s all the endorsement Hagel should need. It comes from someone who’s got enough experience to have served as Secretary Of Defense himself, and who’s a true expert on military management, and a living legend.
Another post with the full interview with General Clark is next, but if you don’t want to wait for text highlights, here it is in video form:
Stay tuned.
