For the first time in the history of The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, it has a non-Academy Awards night event that has dominated the Twitter Top Trend list. That happened, and is happening, this morning at just after 6 AM PST, as the Academy Awards Nominations Announcement resulted in as many as four Twitter Top Trend keywords: #Oscars, Melissa McCarthy, Best Picture, Gary Oldman, Academy Awards Nominations, and Emmanuel Lubezki, as of this writing. That’s a record, and shows that the excitement for the Oscars has not, in any way, declined. It also points the way toward a new reason for advertisers to keep an eye on The Oscars.
After a fledgling start in new media, The Academy has enjoyed the bounce from the rise of online commentary about television and film, and the emergence of a practice called “Social TV,” to now be at the epicenter of this kind of activity. For The Academy to enjoy this level of online buzz when it was not considered to have the “perfect Twitter demographic” is not only amazing, but also means the “Twitter generation” has caught up to The Oscars, and that the average age of the person most likely to use Twitter has jumped.
Let’s look at some of the Twitter Tweets:
