KPIX Oakland Mayoral Poll Flawed Says Expert? Yes.
KPIX CBS 5 San Francisco commissioned a poll that purports to look at how Oakland’s Ranked Choice Voting will turn out on Election Day. The poll says that Rebecca Kaplan (19%) Libby Schaaf (17%) Mayor Jean Quan (15%) Joe Tuman (15%) and Bryan Parker (10%) are the top vote getters. But there is a problem: the poll is missing the third round of voting.
I called the KPIX Newsdesk about the problem and was given to a Gretchen. In so many words she told me that KPIX polls are “always reliable”.
So to check that, I then called Zennie62 guest blogger Grace Ramsey of FairVote.org. That firm is the Rank Choice Voting expert. Grace said that while the KPIX poll is not invalid, it is “incomplete” and that without the 3rd place votes you can’t make a determination on the election with that poll.
KPIX and Survey USA have wasted time and money on a poll that leaves us with more questions than answers. “The 3rd choice is part of the total selection voters have” Grace said. You have to include it in any poll.
Stay tuned.
