Sound Of My Voice , a movie distributed by Fox Searchlight for release April 27th, is a movie I’ve not yet seen in total, but consumed enough of to go out on a limb and say it’s going to be one of the sleeper hits of the year. It’s the first time movie of Britt Marling and Zal Batmanglij, who met when Zal was a freshman at Georgetown and Britt was 17. After giving a presentation on the art of movie making, Britt approached Zal and said she wanted to be involved in making movies with him, and the relationship was established.
Now, the pair has teamed up for what some are already calling a cult classic that centers around an angelic woman named Maggie, who happens to be the head of some kind of cult. A pair of journalists, also boyfriend and girlfriend, make a plan to join the cult and expose Maggie as a fraud, but during the experience discover a lot about her and about themselves.
The simple fact I could write that and feel chills explains to some degree why I think Sound Of My Voice is going to be a hit. The story is both detailed, compelling, and yet maddening. The more questions you ask, the more you find you’re drawn into what it’s all about. Check out this clip:
As you can see the question is, is Maggie really from the future, or is it all just part of her little trick to con you? Britt and Zal leave that to question even as they’re talking about the movie. But the one thing that can’t be questioned is Ms. Marling’s unusual combination of innocent little girl look, biblically angelic image, and model good-looks. She’s the perfect person to design a cult character around.
