At Coliseum JPA Meeting Zennie Abraham Calls For Seats For Save Oakland Sports To Be On JPA At the October 20th 2023 meeting of the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Joint Powers Authority, and in the comments section for the agenda item on the marketing and promotion of the complex, Zenie62Meda CEO Zennie Abraham called for an approach to bidding for events that was not piecemeal. He also called for a sports commission to be established. Abraham created Oakland’s only Sports Commission, the Oakland-Alameda County Sports Commission, in 1999 and for Oakland’s bid to host the 2005 Super Bowl. Since Zennie did what many in the City believed not possible, Oakland’s Economic Development Department set aside $80,000 for the sports commission. But then Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown stopped the payment and fired Abraham for accusing Brown of being racist – an action that was illegal on Brown;’s part, according to California law. Then Oakland City Attorney John Russo told Abraham he had the right to sue the City of Oakland, but Zennie lacked the money to hire an atttorney who would take on his case, and did not find one that would do it on a contengency basis. Zennie added this written comment for this video-blog: “Too often, efforts like the WNBA are politically-driven and have one master, rather than a true project that has people from many areas of the City involved and a budget behind it. So, they come and go, and all too often in ways that embarass the City of Oakland and the Coliseum JPA. Also, way back in 1996, Ezra Rapport wrote the enabling documents for the Coliseum JPA. They called for 20 seats – 10 for Oakland and 10 for Alameda County, but the full list of seats was never filled.” Zennie Abraham continued “So, why not open those seats up and give them to members of Save Oakland Sports, because they actually care about the Coliseum. I am happy the JPA lawyer / County Counsel actually looked up what Ezra wrote and read it for all to hear. Ezra told me to memorize those documents because no one cares.
