At a time when many California cities are strapped for money, Hayward gets the rewards of seeking the development of an energy manufacturing facility: the Calpine Russell Energy Center. It’s one of the largest construction projects in the Bay Area is underway right now in Hayward with 200 workers on site. Here’s how Calpine describes it:
The Russell City Energy Center is a proposed 619-megawatt combined-cycle electric generating facility that will bring much-needed energy capacity to western Alameda county and the San Francisco peninsula. The facility will serve the needs of 600,000 households. The Energy Center, which will use clean, natural gas for fuel, will allow for a greater than 90 percent reduction of emissions and will be 40 percent more fuel efficient than older, fossil-fueled generating facilities in the Bay Area.
As construction of the new facility speeds forward, Calpine made good on its promise and agreement to give the City of Hayward $10 million toward the construction of what will be a nice, brand new library.
To that end, Calpine CEO Jack Fusco was at the construction site Wednesday of last week, and to celebrate this milestone as the construction project ramps up to create 700 total construction jobs and give the check to City of Hayward representatives, Hayward Mayor Michael Sweeney and Council Member Bill Quirk.
As a reminder of the project itself, here again is Calpine’s Norma Dunn:
