Washington Redskins Name Change Could Get $1 Billion For Daniel Snyder

If the Washington Redskins were to change their name, to something else, like the Washington Warriors, the result would be a huge windfall for team owner Daniel Snyder. By my hypothesis, based on my work in making sports business simulations over at my other company Sports Business Simulations2013-10-08-ws1 , is $1 billion.

First, once the decision was officially announced, there would be a rush by fans to snap up Washington Redskins jerseys and all manner of items.

Second, when the new name is released, and with new uniforms, fans would rush to buy that, and be a part of history.

Now let’s take a look at my prediction of $1 billion. In 2012, the Redskins took in $381 million. Merchandise sales generally is about 30 percent of team revenues, so that would be just over $100 million.

I am saying that there would be four times the demand for Redskins items worldwide, and about an equal demand for the new image, both over a two-year period.

Think about this, and consider that it just may be that Daniel Snyder’s pumping up the demand for the Redskins name should he have to make a change. That could explain why he’s holding out for so long, and if so, and I think so, it’s a genius business move.

Stay tuned.
