Today’s trends: Sugar Bowl, School Closings, Rose Bowl, Johnny Weir, and more.

Denard Robinson The Sugar Bowl’s today and pits the The Michigan Wolverines and Virginia Tech Hokies in a game that VaTech sure needs to win to give a campus still reeling from an attack by a lone gun man a month ago. The Sugar Bowl has the 13th ranked Wolverines against the 17th ranked Hokies, so Michigan should be favored. The main reason: Michigan Quarterback Denard Robinson, who comes up big in big games. And Robinson’s helped by sophomore running back Fitzgerald Toussaint, who became the 31st running back in Michigan history to go over 1,000 yards in a season.

Many American parents will be able to get ready to watch the Sugar Bowl in comfort because of a number of school closings due to bad weather on the East Coast. Washington DC and Pittsburgh are just two of the many cities ‘back east,’ as they say here in California, that have announced school closings. It’s so bad that flights to and from Cleveland have been grounded. GoErie.com reports that…

Flights to and from Cleveland have been canceled as snow continues to pile up from a lake-effect storm that is expected to stick around until Tuesday afternoon…Local snowfall totals as of midmorning include 11.2 inches at Canadohta Lake, 3.2 inches in Meadville, 5 inches at Colt Station, 4 inches in North East, 3 inches in Waterford and 1.4 inches at the Erie International Airport, according to the National Weather Service in Cleveland.

The Rose Bowl Still Talked About

I’d have expected the trend to be about The Fiesta Bowl, but instead it’s for the Rose Bowl. This, even after Stanford lost to Oklahoma State in epic choke fashion, and stunned a nation that watched the game. But I have a theory why The Rose Bowl’s the trend today: the number of alumni and students from both Oregon and Wisconsin doing Internet searches related to that amazing orgy of offense yesterday. Both teams set a Rose Bowl first-half scoring record and gained a total of 1,129 yards, with Oregon winning 45-38, after it looked, for a while, like Wisconsin was going to run away with the game.
