What turned me on to the site was a blog post by Talking Points Memo that says “Women For Cain” is anti-single female, or saying that there were “brutal” attacks on “husbandless” women.
So, I thought, ‘let me check this out.’ As compelled as I was to try and find the entries TMP referred to and jump on the blog blast bandwagon against Cain, I could not see anything. Now I’m not into destroying someone for the hell of it; getting the story right is important. The “Women For Cain” entries I saw didn’t bash single women. And it’s obvious Cain’s talked to his wife, and is staying in the GOP Presidential Race.
(And on the matter of race, don’t think the fact that all of his accusers are white didn’t play a role in Cain’s wife’s decision to help her husband. She undoubtedly thinks they may be attacking him as “a black man playing a white man’s game,” and wants to defend him on that basis. If you don’t think that’s a factor, you’re a fool.)
That’s when I started to look at Newt Gingrich, because he doesn’t have a “Women For Newt” website, but sure as hell needs one.
What’s interesting about this entire episode is how all of these women have suddenly come forward during his campaign. Now, this blogger is not a Cain supporter; President Obama is the best leader we’ve had in a generation. But what’s interesting is how Cain’s habit are suddenly used against him, whereas Newt Gingrich gets off without a mention of how he’s treated women.
Look, the fact is none of the women who came forward to bash Cain would have been discovered had it not been for someone paying for opposition research, press communications, and negative campaigning. That’s why this blogger wants to see Cain stay in the GOP race: he’s a symbol of problems all of the GOP candidates have to some degree, and in different ways. The only difference is that no one’s spending money to bring either Newt Gingrich or Texas Governor Rick Perry’s negative stories, and the people involved, to light.
Moreover, Cain staying in the race would mean that whoever invested what has to be a ton of money to get him out of the race isn’t getting a return on their investment. Yipee! Someone out there is trying to get Cain’s voting base – that’s what this is all about. Otherwise, why not focus on Newt?
Take a look at this rather unfortunate blog post excerpt about Newt from 2002:
“Gingrich’s misbehavior goes back years. Fidelity was apparently never his strong point. After marrying his high school math teacher, Jacqueline Battley, even he admits: ”In the 1970s, things happened.”
“As a congressional candidate, he conducted an affair in 1977, a year before enlisting Jackie to write a letter attacking his opponent for planning to leave her family in the district: ”When elected, Newt will keep his family together,” declared one unintentionally hilarious campaign ad. Gingrich ended his 19-year marriage shortly after his victory.”
“He famously visited Jackie in the hospital where she was recovering from surgery for uterine cancer to discuss details of the divorce. He later resisted paying alimony and child support for his two daughters, causing a church to take up a collection. For all of his talk of religious faith and the importance of God, Gingrich left his congregation over the pastor’s criticism of his divorce.”
“Soon thereafter, Gingrich married Marianne Ginther, whom he had previously met at a political fund-raiser. He called her ”the woman I love” and ”my best friend and closest adviser” in his first speech as House speaker, in January 1995… Yet, his relationship with Bisek, a House employee, apparently extended back to 1993 while he was talking of reforming the corrupt welfare state and promoting society’s moral regeneration. Rumors of his relationship with Bisek, more than 20 years his junior, did not stop him from writing his political testament, in which he criticized sex outside of marriage, promoted traditional family life and opined that ”any male who doesn’t support his children is a bum.”
“In May 1999, however, Gingrich called Marianne at her mother’s home. After wishing the 84-year-old matriarch happy birthday, he told Marianne that he wanted a divorce.”
And that was from a blog post in 2002! It makes you wonder what else is going on back there in Newt’s past if “fidelity was apparently never his strong point”? Why do I feel there’s more to this story of Newt’s background? And while I’m at it, a reminder that Gov. Perry has still not faced questions or probes about an alleged gay affair in 2004. In closing, it’s clear this webpage called The Republican Record Of Sexual Misconduct needs to be updated. The point is, all of the candidates have issues of some kind; it just takes someone willing to spend time and money to find them.
