Christophe Beck, John Ottman, Blake Neely, Brian Tyler, and Tyler Bates were featured Hollywood film composers this vlogger had the pleasure of interviewing at the 2014 San Diego Comic Con’s “Musical Anatomy of a Superhero” panel press conference, produced by Costa Communications.
Christophe Beck is most recently known for the score for the Tom Cruise Sci-Fi Film Edge of Tommorrow. John Ottman’s 2014 Comic Con-related contribution was the music for X-Men Days Of Future Past. Blake Neely’s Comic Con focus was on his television work for The Flash and The Arrow, both on The CW. Brian Tyler was feted at Comic Con for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Thor: The Dark World, and the highly anticipated Avengers: Age Of Ultron coming in 2015. And Tyler Bates talked about the then-to-be-released Guardians Of The Galaxy, which turned out to be one of the major movie buzzes of the year.
Of the group, Beck, Ottman, Neely, and Tyler are listed, in most cases more than once, as the composers of several of the 114 Original Scores in contention for nominations in the Original Score category for the 87th, 2015 Oscars.
For the 2015 Oscars, Christophe Beck’s score in Edge of Tommorrow is on the list, as is his music for the following films: Cake, Endless Love, and Red Army. Blake Neely’s score for The Case against 8 is mentioned by The Academy on the list. John Ottman “scores” with not just X-Men: Days of Future Past, but for Non-Stop as well. And Brian Tyler’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles score made the list and the music he made for Into the Storm did, too.
No Guardians Of The Galaxy On The List?
Of course, the obvious question is ‘Where’s Guardians Of The Galaxy?’ Tyler Bates did an excellent job of melding old-school 70s pop music with a recognizable theme for the MARVEL Entertainment hit about a rag-tag group of space criminals – and it’s that mixing that just may be the reason why it’s not on The Academy’s list. The Academy’s press release announcing the movies in contention contains this paragraph:
To be eligible, the original score must be a substantial body of music that serves as original dramatic underscoring, and must be written specifically for the motion picture by the submitting composer. Scores diluted by the use of tracked themes or other preexisting music, diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs, or assembled from the music of more than one composer shall not be eligible.
Guardians Of The Galaxy was dominated by the use of “preexisting music”. Case in point:
