A farm in Colorado has to recall its entire cantaloupe harvest due to one of the melons testing positive for Listeria. Listeria is a bacteria that can cause complications during pregnancy, it can cause serious illness to anyone who consumes it.
There are 17 states where the cantaloupe is being recalled. The Christian Science Monitor tells us:
“Jensen Farms shipped more than 300,000 cases of the cantaloupes to 17 states between July 29 and Sept. 10. The states are: Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming.”
This was brought to my attention after my boyfriend consumed cantaloupe today, however, Maine is not one of the states on that list so I think that we are safe.
If you are living in any of those 17 states and have cantaloupe: THROW IT OUT. If you have eaten any of it you should probably go see a doctor to make sure that you’re okay.
The CDC is even saying that this is deadly – so I think that for the time being I’m going to stay on the safe side and not consume any cantaloupe:
The LA Times reports that 22 people have been infected with Listeria and two people have died. This is serious – and that is scary, because cantaloupe is delicious and after recently consuming cantaloupe it makes me nervous. The LA Times also gives more information about Listeria:
“According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, listeriosis is an illness caused by eating food that is contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. The ailment causes gastrointestinal symptoms and fever and muscle aches — and in severe cases can lead to headache, stiff neck, confusion and convulsion. “
