2019 Oakland Raiders Defense Better Against The Run. Here’s Why
The 2018 Oakland Raiders Defense was terrible against the run. It gave up 4.7 yards per run attempt. Why? One big reason was the defensive alignment. It featured one or both defensive ends standing up. A method popularized by the Seattle Seahawks. But asking the defensive ends to stand up takes away leverage against the run.
In 2019, the Oakland Raiders Defense is better. Over two games the Defense is giving up just 2.8 yards per carry. It’s not that the Kansas City Chiefs were successful passing, but that it was through the air that they could win. The Raiders Run Defense was maintaining ground control. The reason?
The defensive ends aren’t standing. The Raiders have gone to a more traditional and effective stance for the defensive line. And as you can see it’s paying off big so far.
The question is can the Raiders sustain that success against the Minnesota Vikings. I think they can but it’s going to be tough. In my next video we will review why.
Stay tuned.
