Ken Houston Oakland Mayors Race Interview

Ken Houston, who’s running for Mayor of Oakland, first came onto the Oakland Political Scene as the Community Liaison for Turner Construction Company. For this blogger, his first public media appearance was during the Oakland City Council Hearing on the report released by Oakland City Auditor Courtney Ruby – the one that singles our Councilmembers Larry Reid and Desley Brooks for calling Oakland City Staff and getting them to be more productive in the process of doing projects the Council had established – in other words for doing something every Oakland Councilmember has done in the history of the organization.

Ruby’s report was regarded as racist and divided City Hall. It also galvanized much of Oakand’s African American Political Community. But Houston had not decided to run for Mayor at that point in time; what made him do it was seeing Oakland Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan announce her run for Mayor of Oakland in his East Oakland neighborhood, and (he claims) leave trash in it that he volunteered to clean up. Houston got angry, and then got his money and signatures and became a candidate.

Unlike many of the other candidates Houston doesn’t believe more cops is the answer “It’s jobs and image, Zennie. If I am forced to the underground economy, I’m a bust you in the head, too, Zennie.”

Ken and I talked for 17 minutes, so I will leave the rest of his message for you to consume in the video.
