The Man Of Steel sucks? Not anymore.

The Man Of Steel has sucked its way to a record $125 million box office take for the month of June.

The movie starring Henry Cavill and Amy Adams with Lawrence Fishburne, Kevin Costner, and Michael Shannon, has surpassed expectations, sloppy critics, and mean Twitter contributors who said it sucked, to earn $113 million over this weekend, and that combined with a $12 million take from Thursday brings us to the $125 million total, thus far.

And if you add the international box office, the current Man Of Steel box office total is $197 million.

Prior to Man Of Steel, it was Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story 3 that held the June record, having set that in 2010. And Man Of Steel has outperformed the previous version of Superman, Superman Returns, by more than double, as that film made just $52 million in its domestic box office opening weekend in 2006.

According to the blog Deadline, a Warner Bros Studios executive – that’s the studio which teamed with Legendary Pictures to make the film – said that Man Of Steel “beat all expectations.” It played in 4,207 theaters with 3D in 3,357 of them, and on 9,710 screens in the 24 international markets.

For those of you keeping score, like me, Man Of Steel is behind just Iron Man 3 for the prize of box office opening weekend champion. Iron Man 3 opened at $174 million in the US, and $207 million when international revenues are combined for its opening weekend.

Now, the next question is will Man Of Steel show that it had legs and reach Iron Man 3’s $1 billion level, which it achieved in just 24 days?

Stay tuned.
