Lisfranc Injury, Matt Schaub Out, Leinart In For Texans

The surprising Houston Texans are dealing with a new surprise: starting quarterback Matt Schaub is out for the rest of the 2011 NFL Season with something called a Lisfranc Injury. Now, USC grad and National Champion Matt Leinart steps in for his first NFL regular season game start in two years.

And what is a Lisfranc injury?

LisfrancThe Lisfranc joint is the point at which the metatarsal bones (long bones that lead up to the toes) and the tarsal bones (bones in the arch) connect. The Lisfranc ligament is a tough band of tissue that joins two of these bones. This is important for maintaining proper alignment and strength of the joint.

Injuries to the Lisfranc joint most commonly occur in automobile accident victims, military personnel, runners, horseback riders, football players and participants of other contact sports, or something as simple as missing a step on a staircase.

Whatever the details, the 7 and 3 Texans suffered a major blow, but if it’s true there’s opportunity in chaos, then Matt Leinart has a golden chance to come in and salvage Houston’s season. At this point, many have the Texans winning the AFC South, going to the playoffs and possibly the Super Bowl. Yes, in Indianapolis where their arch-rival Colts play.

But this Lisfranc problem puts the QB position in question, because Leinart’s past in the NFL, which has not been great, is all anyone can remember. Not USC. In the NFL, Leinart, the 1st Round Draft Pick of The Arizona Cardinals, has been less than stellar. His run with the team that brought him into the NFL ended in 2010, when Derek Anderson took over as the main signal caller for the team that plays in Glendale.

Now, Matt Leinart’s got a chance at a second act. Earlier in the year, Matt considered moving to Seattle to play for his USC Coach Pete Carroll, but backed off. Now, he gets his chance, again. Matt’s got time to prepare as this is the Texans bye week. Stay tuned.
