Oscar Nominations : 87th Academy Awards Nominations Full List

The Oscar Nominations for the 87th Academy Awards are in and the list, presented below, has some surprises. Unbroken, the Angelina Jolie movie, has been almost completely shut out of movie awards season, and that pattern continued with the Oscar Nominations for the 87th Academy Awards.

Also, Godzilla, my personal favorite, was shut out of all categories, most notably special effects. But I didn’t see any ads, or indication, that Godzilla was being marketed for the Oscars, or the awards season. However, Alexander Desplat, who scored the music for Godzilla, ‘scored’ the rare double nomination for the same category, but for The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Imitation Game.

Also, Jennifer Aniston was shut out of the Best Actress nominations, and this after a reportedly aggressive push on her part. On the other hand, Meryl Streep received the 19th Oscar nomination of her career for Into The Woods (she’s won three times).

UPDATE: I have to include the now famous “Dick Poop” error that was made by Academy President Cheryl Boone Issacs! In this day of flubs becoming media gold, I wonder if that was deliberate?

Once Again, Oscars Are A White Race

The one sad part about the Oscars is that, once again, as it seems to have been for generations, the Academy Awards turns a blind eye to blacks who turn in great performances. Most notably David Oyelowo of Selma. By contrast, American Sniper gets snapped up in the awards mania.

This happens so often that I’m starting to wonder how much of this has to do with money spent to market a movie, or an actor, for awards season and the Oscars? If we as African Americans really want to change this pattern, we have to make organizations that finance black films and black actors, even to the point of awards season marketing.
