Catherine Zeta Jones Brings Awareness to Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar Disorder existed before Catherine Zeta Jones announced she had it, but it always seems like a mental disorder or any disorder at all doesn’t really matter until there is a celebrity that has it. There are so many people out there with bipolar disorder, but now that Jones is publicly bipolar – all of a sudden people are writing articles about bipolar disorder and there’s more bipolar awareness just since yesterday. Even on Google Trends one of the most searched terms was “bipolar disorder.” All of a sudden a celebrity has something and it is now a more important issue – and that isn’t fair.

Should people suffering from bipolar disorder be thanking Jones for coming out so that now people are paying attention to this illness? There are so many assumptions that are made that bipolar individuals cannot work and are insane and cannot function in society, but maybe now people will become educated.

TMZ reports:

One of Catherine’s reps now tells People.com, “After dealing with the stress of the past year, Catherine made the decision to check in to a mental health facility for a brief stay to treat her Bipolar Disorder.”
