If you’re wondering why this Godzilla movie is so special that it deserves its own day, watch this blogger’s video blog here:

godzilla-review-1998-2 This Godzilla 2014 movie started almost after the terrible Godzilla 1998 movie produced and directed by Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin of Independence Day fame. The problem with the oland Emmerich and Dean Devlin version of Godzilla was that Godzilla wasn’t himself – he was short at about 160 feet tall rather than 400 feet tall; very much afraid of things like helicopters chasing him, rather than smashing them like flies; and the greatest slap of all, he lacked Godzilla’s trademark, the one ability that made him famous other than his real height: his atomic breath.

Hardcore Godzilla fans, which number into the millions Worldwide, were outraged. The movie, due to an effective marketing campaign which implied that Godzilla was going to smash New York, was highly anticipated. So much so, that when fans were served up what could only be called a whimpy Godzilla, interest in the film dropped, and the box office reflected it: it made $138 million in America, but cost $130 million to make.

Godzilla 1998 barely broke even.

Then, in the mid 2000s, Brian Rogers met Yoshimitsu Banno, who held the rights to TOHO’s Godzilla, and both had an idea for a 3D version of the monster. Here’s my interview with Brian in 2010, who was good enough to speak with me at the Variety 3D Entertainment Summit, and this was at a time when the press in attendance gave him zero attention even though he was clearly introduced as the ‘producer of Godzilla’ – then there was me. Our objective was to set the right course for future talk about the movie because there was so much misinformation out there, but one thing Mr. Rogers made clear was that we were going to get Godzilla as we expected him to be:

The next year, Gareth Edwards was selected as the director, and a team of cast members and other producers and writers was assembled.

Eventually, the Godzilla movie itself began filming in Hawaii, Canada, and Los Angeles. And as filming progressed, reports and photos pointed to the making of a true epic film. Here’s the synopsis of Godzilla 2014:

An epic rebirth to Toho’s iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure, from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.

Gareth Edwards directs Godzilla, which stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass), Oscar® nominee Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai, Inception), Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene), Oscar® winner Juliette Binoche (The English Patient, Cosmopolis), and Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine), with Oscar® nominee David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck., The Bourne Legacy) and Bryan Cranston (Argo, TV’s Breaking Bad).

Edwards directs from a screenplay by Max Borenstein, story by David Callaham, based on the character Godzilla owned and created by TOHO CO., LTD. Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni are producing with Mary Parent and Brian Rogers. Patricia Whitcher and Alex Garcia are serving as executive producers, alongside Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira.

The behind-the-scenes creative team includes Oscar®-nominated director of photography Seamus McGarvey (“Anna Karenina,” “Atonement”); production designer Owen Paterson (The Matrix trilogy); editor Bob Ducsay (Looper); Oscar®-nominated costume designer Sharen Davis (Dreamgirls, Ray, Django Unchained); and Oscar®-winning visual effects supervisor Jim Rygiel (the Lord of the Rings series). The score is being created by Oscar®-nominated composer Alexandre Desplat (Argo, The King’s Speech).

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures present a Legendary Pictures production, a Gareth Edwards film, Godzilla. Slated to open on May 16, 2014, the film is expected to be presented in 3D, 2D and IMAX® in select theatres and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, except in Japan, where it will be distributed by Toho Co., Ltd. Legendary Pictures is a division of Legendary Entertainment.

Stay tuned for more on this Godzilla Day!
