Cowboys’ Jones Says Tony Romo Will Be “Involved,” Coach Garrett Says He Was

The Dallas Cowboys continue to look like two organizations, the one Jerry Jones runs and the one Jason Garrett operates. There’s Dallas Cowboys Owner Jones making the personnel decisions off the field, but then making comments regarding what players will do on it. And there’s Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Jason Garrett playing media defense, saying in perfect bureaucratic style, ‘We’re already doing that.’

That’s what has happened over the month of May, as Jerry Jones got this whole mess off to a rousing start by saying that Tony Romo would become more involved in the offense after signing his giant $108 million contract. Here’s Jones (according to Cowboys Blog):

“I can speak for Jason in this respect, everything he’s about wants more buy-in and more participation from the player, so if Tony, for instance, would be here Monday through Saturday, that is far better, and be here from seven in the morning to six o’clock at night, all over this place, then that’s better than the way it’s been. We’ll have more success, and Jason believes that. It’s certainly at quarterback but he believes it at the other positions, too.”

And then Garrett says this:

“I think Tony Romo is a great leader for our football team. He’s been a guy who’s always been very committed to what we’re doing. And it’s something that we’ve always wanted as coaches, you want your quarterback to be involved. We’ve always felt like he’s done that and he’ll continue to do that going forward.”

In other words, while Jerry Jones has one way of thinking about it; Jason Garrett obviously is defensive when he hears it.

And that doesn’t even begin to address the question of what “involved” means.
