Oakland LGBTQ Community Center To Open Tonight, and it’s located near Lake Merritt.

I just received this press release from Oakland Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan, who will open the facility:

OAKLAND, CA – This evening, Oakland’s LGBTQ Community Center will host their grand opening, founded by Jeff Myers and Joe Hawkins. Along with being an all-inclusive LGBTQ community center, the center will also host offices and space for other start-ups.
“I am proud and thankful to live in a city which celebrates people of all sexual orientations, backgrounds, races and nationalities. Last week, the Pride Flag was raised, this weekend we will celebrate Oakland PRIDE and tonight, Oakland’s LGBTQ Community Center will open their doors, a space that is so critically needed. Let us reflect on our good fortune to live in such an inclusive community, and rededicate ourselves to continuing to fight for justice for all. That means continuing to address the struggles of homeless LGBTQ youth, transgender victims of bullying and discrimination, working to end white supremacy, and strengthening respect throughout our community.” says Kaplan.

Several years ago, Councilmember Kaplan along with other community members convened an LGBT round-table, where many ideas were discussed and now we are seeing some of them come into fruition, including Oakland PRIDE and now Oakland’s LGBTQ Community Center.

“In Oakland several years ago we convened an LGBT round-table, which resulted in ideas to take action to expand support for our multicultural LGBT community. Through this work, important plans were made and steps taken, and volunteers stepped forward, to help build support and community. Thanks to the efforts of early participants in these discussions, Oakland will have a nonprofit, all-inclusive, LGBTQ Community Center HQ! This space, created primarily by African American LGBT people and open to all.” says Kaplan.
